BACKGROUND HISTORY: About two years back, a young boy named Ciel Phantomhive summoned before him a great demon in the form of a small raven, asking for a contract to be made between them. Having lost faith in God, he turned to this demon in order to have his wish fulfilled. His wish was to destroy the people who had set fire to his mansion and killed both his parents on his birthday and make them feel the same pain he had felt. In return, once his wish was fulfilled, he would give his soul to the demon as payment. A contract was formed and a seal was placed over the boy's right eye: a seal that would allow the demon to find him no matter where he was, and tie them together so that the demon would always be able to come to his side to serve him in fulfilling that wish, and so that Ciel could never run from the demon.
Ciel named that demon 'Sebastian Michaelis', and made him his butler for the time being, and the demon took the form of a tall black-haired butler and resigned himself to that status until the contract had been fulfilled on both ends, with every intention of being a perfect butler up until the very end.
For those two years, Sebastian has been living in the rebuilt Phantomhive mansion, tending to the Earl Phantomhive's every wish and whim. He goes about hiring three extra helpers: a maid, a cook and a gardener, although they appear to be less of a help and more of a hindrance. There is nothing he is incapable of doing for his master from everyday chores, including cleaning up after the chores the other three helpers attempt to gathering extreme intelligence, saving his master from undue harm, making only the finest desserts to satiate the Earl's sweet tooth, and killing anyone who gets in his master's way.
Although his ultimate goal is the destruction of all those involved in the deaths of Ciel's parents and the destruction on the mansion, he obediently fulfills any duty his master gives him. That includes working the "special" cases that the Queen sends to Ciel. The Phantomhive family has been known for being considered a sort of "guard dog" to the Queen even before Ciel's time. At times, she will send him letters giving him details about particularly troubling matters going on in the area and ask for his help in solving whatever matters he can.
With the help of Sebastian, who gladly does whatever Ciel asks regarding these cases, he is able to help the Queen a number of times. At times, it looks as though very little progress is actually being made towards fulfilling Ciel's wish, yet Sebastian does not appear impatient, and serves him completely, playing the role of the perfect butler and pawn, allowing Ciel to use him as he sees fit until his final wish is granted.
TIMELINE SUMMARY: Sebastian is taken a few days after the death and funeral of Madam Red, aka Angelina Duress.
The first case the Queen requests Ciel look in to is one of a number of mysterious deaths caused by someone they have proclaimed as "Jack the Ripper". The murders all had one peculiar thing in common, however, and that was the precise removal of the uterus, despite being rather ruthlessly slaughtered. Surpassing Scotland Yard, Ciel and Sebastian caught the culprit after making one small mistake the first time around.
Their culprit was actually two people: Madam Red and her butler: Grell Sutcliff. What seemed like an innocent, bumbling failure of a butler, was actually a Reaper who uses a death scythe modified in the form of a chainsaw. Grell teamed up with Angelina and posed as her butler as a mere guise for their real goal of killing women whom Madam Red saw "unfit to be mothers". For her it was a rather personal matter, as someone who wanted a child more than anything, but could not have one.
But she saw Ciel as a son to her, after her sister (Ciel's mother) died, and cared for him too much to listen to Grell's order to kill Ciel, in order to silence him. Displeased by her hesitation, Grell killed her himself before being dragged off in the midst of a losing fight with Sebastian.
PERSONALITY: It's implied that Sebastian has a very two-sided personality, however, he has unrivaled skill in controlling his demonic personality, and maintaining his outward personality. This fact in and of himself makes him seem incredibly manipulative knowing what he really is and yet seeing the almost flawless way he plays the part he has been given. His charisma is undoubtedly strong, winning over friends and foes alike, as well as attracting some strange beings to him.
We don't see his demonic side very clearly, or often. However, his thoughts show that inwardly, he doesn't really have a high tolerance for stupidity. But even as he's losing his temper in his head, he still keeps himself in character, never voicing his thoughts or opinions, although when he loses his temper, the three hired hands (who are usually the cause of said rage), usually pick up on unspoken dangerous vibes. There appears to be a stubborn streak in him. And there are some things that when said, he will immediately turn sour about, including any talk about there being no such thing as a soul. Other small hints of his demonic personality include his strange, powerful love of cats and strong dislike of dogs.
But as I said, there are few circumstances where he shows signs of his demon self, instead focusing all his energy into acting the part he had been given. He speaks strongly about separating who he was and who he became when Ciel gave him his name, saying he was baptized in that moment by that name.
Sebastian speaks in a refined manner befitting of one who serves a noble such as the Earl Phantomhive. His speech is poetic and pleasing. In the same way, he carries himself in a proud and elegant way, and is incredibly graceful, even when he's forced to move suddenly to prevent unforeseen disaster or fight and protect his master in battles. While he is capable of doing many things himself, his mind is as sharp as his body. In an emergency he can quickly come up with a plan that will take even the worst situations and turn things around in their favor. These are all skills that attest to his ability as a butler, and reflect upon not only him, but the well-known Phantomhive name.
Yet, despite the fact that he is often praised for going far beyond what any normal butler could do, his response is always the same, saying that it is only natural for a butler serving the Phantomhive name to be able to do these things, despite the fact that there's nothing normal or natural about all the things he can do that normal butlers can not. He is firmly modest, and in public, he is always aware of his position as a lowly servant. However, in practice, he will not completely hold his tongue if he believes his suggestions are in his master's best interest. But he is very attentive to his master and can almost always pick out when it is alright to give his opinions and when it's best for him to just quietly follow his master's orders.
Sometimes it seems like he's going overboard with his obsession to make sure everything is perfect, and some of the things he does (like life-size sculptures of men made entirely out of chocolate) seem to border on insane. However, considering he's a demon, and his skills far surpass the normal human limits, for him it seems completely normal much to everyone else's amazement.
He has a bit of a dry sense of humor, when it shows itself, although he doesn't always appreciate his master's humor, especially when it's about him. Sarcasm isn't unheard of for him, although it's well-veiled unless he deems that it's alright. This is usually reserved for those who are enemies of his master, or in general people whom he doesn't feel the need to hide his distaste for all the time. But even if he keeps it veiled, he's almost always completely cautious, erring on the side of caution, so as to avoid being seen as someone who is rude or improper. And it's not always meant in a demeaning way. However, sometimes the more you know about him, the more mysterious the things he says can seem. Most of the time it's completely impossible to know what he's really thinking, or whether he's being truly sincere, or acting, especially the more you get to know him and the more you learn about his particular circumstances.
But to his master, he is completely honest, although he isn't always completely forthcoming with information if he thinks it's for the best.
SPECIAL ABILITIES: He's a perfect butler, first and foremost, but he's also a deadly demon behind that cute smile. Super-human speed and senses allow him to do the work of five (or fix the horrible mistakes of others.) He has demonic combat skills that are not limited by the implements he's using (so don't think that just because all he has is a butter knife, that you're safe). He has a demonic form, which he doesn't take often. But this does allude to his ability to shape-shift. But because he's content to being in Butler-mode for the remainder of his demonic contract, this last skill is rarely used. However, one demonic "ability" he has that he has at his disposal is to form binding contracts with people via a little pentagram. Currently he's in a contract, and the symbol of that contract allows him to know where the person he is in contract with is. The closer the symbol is to the person's eye, the easier it is for him to find them. It's also safe to say that he can't be killed by conventional human methods, including being shot or having limbs cut from him. This is just part of his demon physiology and with it comes a high tolerance for pain.
SAMPLES THIRD PERSON: Sebastian Michaelis was not amused.
Deep down, his instincts told him that this was more than a mere "accident". It was no "series of unfortunate events" that got him here. After all, he was a demon and demons didn't even need sleep. It was a mere pleasure they indulged in occasionally.
Therefore the fact that he would wake up, not remembering having indulged in sleep in the first place, on a foreign vessel was more than bewildering. It also made him deeply irritated. And the strong scent of sea water, cheap wood and poorly made food high in grease and preservatives that assaulted his acute senses exacerbated the matter. It took but a second to realize that during his mysterious nap he had lost not only London, but his master as well. Due to his contract with this particular twelve year old, there was no reason he shouldn't be able to sense him. Yet the truth of the matter was that he couldn't.
Something was terribly wrong here, and it wasn't just that atrocious smelling meal that was cooking.
Unfortunately, there was a reasonable voice inside his head that said it would be more unusual for things to go smoothly. Worse yet, he knew it was right. Normal was the last thing he ever encountered. Why should this day be any different.
As the esteemed butler Sebastian Michaelis of the Phantomhive household, it was his job to overcome all of these things. It was only natural for a butler of his standing to be able to do this.
Pulling himself out of the cramped corner of the deck he found himself secluded in, he shoved down his own appalling and unnecessary feelings of rage and confusion that he determined would only hinder him. The tall, black haired butler found himself rather stiff. Stretching out each of his long limps slowly and gracefully, like a drowsy cat, the demon butler's red eyes, however, snapped up - alert, taking in every detail about his surroundings.
Sufficiently loosened up, he looked around and decided it was time to approach someone for some much needed answers.
FIRST PERSON: I hate to sound presumptuous, but I must confess that I am at a loss. It is hard for me to imagine simply falling asleep in the middle of my work. Even if I were to openly accept that I had failed my duties and done such a thing, I don't recall doing so.
I've lost my master, which has me rather confounded. And what's worse I seem to have lost London entirely.
I'll admit that I have seen my share of strange things. But surely this isn't possible. If someone would be so kind as to explain what is going on, I would be quite grateful.
